Masala - Iowa City, Iowa

Indian, all vegan/vegetarian

There are two Indian joints located in downtown
Iowa City – Masala and India Café. As I can’t speak for the latter, perhaps take my next statement with a grain of salt: as a vegan, Masala is a gift from the metal-gods toIowa (or whatever god(s) you happen to follow).

Menu items are clearly marked “vegan” so you don’t have to waste precious eatin’ time trying to figure out which items aren’t options. (The vegan samosas are phenomenal.)

This goes for their lunch buffet (offered Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday-Sunday 11:a.m.-3:00p.m.) as, just like the menu, items that are vegan are clearly labeled for convenience and typically includes things like the coconut curry – which is delicious – and a handful of other vegan options.

Be mindful of their hours, though, since they close after the lunch buffet and don’t open back again until
5:00 p.m. There is nothing worse than expecting a good, hearty plate of Indian food at 4:15 p.m. and realizing Masala won’t be open for another forty five minutes.
