Gourmet Dog Japon - Seattle, Washington

hot dogs, vegan options

Located on Pike Street in downtown Seattle, Washington; this hot dog stand features some of the craziest combinations of ingredients for hot dogs and sausages. The sausage I got from here was a vegan Italian-style sausage topped with pineapple, red cabbage, and Italian dressing on a toasted bun. Another option was loaded with traditionally cooked chow mein noodles. Ludicrous! Go here and try something crazy.

Capitol Hill hot dog stands - Seattle, Washington

hot dogs, vegan options

Coming from Chicago, I had the audacity to scoff at the pride Seattle takes in its “street meat” (in quotations because this is where I first heard this term, so I am supposing that the term is somehow linked to this Seattle tradition). I humbly left that city, having been convinced that Chicago hasn’t got shit on Seattle’s style.

Walk around the Capitol Hill neighborhood late at night on any night from Thursday to Sunday and it is likely that you will wind up at the intersection of Pike & Broadway. When I stumbled upon this intersection around midnight, it was home to two competing hot dog stands, set up on opposite sides of the street from one another. I made sure to get myself lost enough to walk in a circle and get a sausage from both.

The traditional Seattle hot dog incorporates cream cheese and grilled onions. Not vegan, I know. Cool concept, though. Both stands are conscientious enough to offer a vegetarian Italian sausage option—and I know it’s vegan because it’s the same sausage that Progressive Field in Cleveland (home of the Indians) offers as one of its vegan options.

If you are around here on any night Thursday through Sunday, perhaps you will be lucky to find some vegan happenstance. These places open late and stay open later (midnight to 4 or 5am). These hot dog carts feature a wide variety of condiments on the side for your pleasure: onions, relish, tomato, sauerkraut, a variety of hot sauces, and more obscure things my brain forgot to process.

***Notes from the editor: This review is not of a specific restaurant. Just hot dog stands in general. Do the employees wear gloves? Fuck.
